By-law No. 1424 concerning solid fuel heating and cooking units

By-law No. 1424 is to reduce polluting emissions and thus preserve air quality.

Under this by-law, no stove or fireplace allowing the use of a solid fuel, except wood pellet, may be installed inside a building.

Besides, no solid fuel auxiliary heaters already in a building may be used when a smog alert issued by Info-Smog, an Environment Canada service, is in effect for the Montreal area.

Fines under this by-law vary depending on whether the offence is committed by an individual or a corporation, and on the number of earlier convictions.

The by-law does not apply to natural gas, propane and electric appliances.
