Household garbage may be put out after 19:00 on the evening before collection but before 7:30 on collection days.
Collection takes place once a week, on Wednesdays, for residential buildings with fewer than eight units and twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, for businesses and for apartment buildings with eight or more units.
Household garbage must be placed in well-sealed, waterproof containers or tightly closed plastic bags that are easy to carry. Containers and bags must be placed on the property next to the sidewalk.
See our folder on this subject:
Bulky items such as television sets, mattresses and sofas will be picked up free of charge at the same time as household garbage if they are placed next to the sidewalk.
For safety reasons, the doors or covers of bulky items such as dishwashers should be removed before they are put out for pick-up.
If you are taking part in the yard waste collection, just place your yard waste inside the green rollout bin making sure you follow the instructions for this type of collection. Be careful when you handle your rollout bin for cleaning purposes; the cover, which provides counterweight, can put the bin off balance when tipped over.
It should be noted that the yard waste collection ends around mid-November only to resume by mid-April.
Have a look at our folder regarding yard waste collection [PDF 777kB].
For residences not served by the yard waste collection: during summer months, small branches securely tied in bundles 1.2 m (4 ft.) long and 60 cm (2 ft.) in diameter and dead leaves and grass clippings in bags will be picked up with the regular garbage if placed next to the sidewalk. These bags must not weigh more than 25 kg (55 lb) each.
Unsure whether you live along the yard waste collection route or not? Check out the latest route map [PDF 301kB].
Recyclable materials include glass containers, cans, plastic items, paper and cardboard. In doubt, have a look at our:
Residents served by the separate pick-up program must put their recyclables in a blue rollout recycling bin. The cover of the bin must be fully closed and nothing may be left next to the bin: that material will not be picked up. Be careful when you handle your rollout bin for cleaning purposes; the cover, which provides counterweight, can put the bin off balance when tipped over.
The blue rollout recycling bins are the property of the Town, they are numbered and must remain at the address where they have been delivered.
To allow for mechanical pick-up, a rollout bin must be placed so the wheels and handles are facing the house, on the property, no more than 1 m (3 ft.) from the curb after 19:00 on the evening before pick-up, but before 7:00 on collection days.
After it has been emptied, the bin must be removed from the curb before 23:30 on collection day.
Occupants of apartment buildings with more than eight units should put their recyclables in the bins provided for each type of material. The bins are usually located in the building’s basement.
The recycling program takes on a new dimension in Mount Royal with a permanent Salvation Army collection bin for new and used clothing. The clothing collection bin is located in the arena parking lot (1050 Dunkirk Road) behind the fire station and is accessible 24 hours a day.
The types of reusable clothing: all clothing-related textiles (pants, shirts, T-shirts, vests, sweaters, etc.), including synthetic materials (raincoats, windbreakers). Household linens (clean towels and bed sheets), shoes, boots, mittens and leather articles such as handbags are accepted.
Articles left in the clothing collection bin must be clean and in good condition.
Please note that you can also get rid of your used clothing during the Town’s pick-up of household hazardous waste (HHW). This event is particularly useful when you have a large quantity of used clothing to donate, for example after your spring cleaning.
Household refrigerators and air conditioners are picked up separately so that their halocarbons can be drained. Please e-mail us or call 514-734-3037 for instructions.
For safety reasons, the doors and covers of refrigerators, freezers and other bulky items should be removed before they are put out for pick-up.
In collaboration with the MIRA Foundation, three collection points have been set up in municipal buildings:
