Population

The Town of Mont-Royal is rich with the diversity of different nationalities in its societal fabric. As of the 2001 census, there were 18,682 people living in TMR, marking an increase of 2.2% since 1996. Our population also makes up 1.03% of the Island’s population. The majority of residents, 94%, consider themselves to be Canadian citizens and the rest, 6%, consider themselves as “other”.

In 2007, the official population count is 19,361 according to the Ministère des Affaires municipales et des Régions (MAMR)’s latest Population decree.

Population density and dwellings

The Town’s total area spreads over 7.7 square kilometres for an average of 2,438.9 people per sq km. In addition, there are 7,267 dwellings or 948.7 dwellings per sq km and 5,215 families residing in the town. That’s an average of 2.6 people per dwelling.

Population by Sex

The population of the Town is made up of 9,875 women and 8,805 men. Women represent 53% of the population and men 47%. It is important to conclude that there is a balance between the amount of men and women in TMR.

Population by Age

The Town is comprised of a vast array of ages. It spreads out with 18% under the age of 14, 17% between the ages of 15 and 29, 19% between the ages of 30 and 44, 20% between the ages of 45 and 59, 5% between the ages of 60 and 64, and 19% who are 65 years of age or older. The average age is 40.5. It is vital for a Town to have a balanced population ratio and TMR has enough of various age groups to be sustainable.


Marital Status

The majority of residents (55%) are married couples, while 29% are single, 8% are widowed, 6% are divorced and 2% are separated. The common-law relationship is at 7 %, whereas 93% are not in common-law relationships.


Family structure and children

The family structure for TMR is mainly made up of 88% of two-parent families and 12% single-parents. Among that 12%, 10% are headed by a woman and 2% by a man. The average number of children per household is 1.2.

Religion

The top five religions found in TMR are Roman Catholic at 52%, Jewish at 12%, Greek Orthodox at 7%, no religion at 7% and Muslim at 6%.


Language

The most dominant official language in TMR is French at 45% followed by English at 26%. However the dominant groups of languages are English and French at 77%. Since TMR is formed by many different nationalities the top five non-official languages are Arabic at 6%, Greek and Italian at 3%, Vietnamese at 2% and Chinese at 1%.

Immigrant status

30% of Town of Mount Royal residents are immigrants. Of that 30%, the top five places of birth of immigrants are France 9%, Lebanon 9%, Egypt 6%, Vietnam 6% and Greece 5%.

Between 1996 and 2001, 730 new immigrants settled in TMR. The top five main countries consisted of France 18%, Lebanon 8%, China 7%, the United States 5% and Afghanistan 4%. In both cases, France and Lebanon have been leading.

From 1961 up until 2001, the dominant period of immigration was 1961-1970 and the average age group that immigrated was 20 years old and over.

Education

School attendance by the population between the ages of 15 to 24 years is at 85% full time, 3% part time and 12% not attending. The highest level of educational attainment by the population over 20 years of age has been the University level at 62%.

The top five major post-secondary educations are Commerce at 24%, followed by Social Sciences at 16%, Health Professions at 14%, Humanities at 10% and finally Engineering at 8%

Income

The total average individual income of the population 15 years and over was $59,582 in 2000. As for family income, the average goes up to $141,848, much higher than the Island of Montreal which has an average of $62,410.

Total average income for a couple is $152,034, married couple $150,823, Common Law $161,563, male single-parent $60,439 and female single-parent $49,708.

Economy and Employment

Main occupations declared by the population of 15 years and over are concentrated in the areas of management at 23.6%, business, finance and administration at 19.1%, and sales and services at 14.5 %.

Self-employed workers represent 13.1% of the population that is 15 years old and over. This rate ranks Mount Royal second in self-employed workers on the Island of Montreal, behind Westmount.

It is interesting to note that jobs provided on Mount Royal territory, notably in its industrial area, often attract workers from outside the Town.

A recent study of the industrial area performed by the office of Daniel Arbour and Associates points out that they count 16,000 jobs. They notice that the strongest job concentration is in the field of wholesale trade and distribution, with 5,255 jobs, which represents 33% of the jobs in the area. On the other hand, manufacturing has the second largest concentration of jobs in the industrial area of Mount Royal with 3,804 jobs, which represents 24% of declared jobs.
