Sewer back-up

Public Works responds to domestic sewer back-up emergencies within twenty-four hours.

Besides providing immediate support by advising the property owner on how to limit the damage to his or her residence, Public Works determines whether the source of the back-up is in the public or the private part of the system. It should be noted that Town of Mount Royal assumes the former until evidence to the contrary is found.

When it is reasonable to assume that the problem lies with the Town infrastructure, the sewer lines are inspected using a camera. If the public system is indeed the source of the damage caused to the residence, the problem is corrected and the Town assumes responsibility for repairing any damage to the owner’s property.

On the other hand, if the back-up is due to a problem with the private system, which begins at the property line, notice is given to the owner, who is wholly responsible for repairing the line and any damage caused to his or her home.

You can help Public Works help you in the event of a back-up simply by ensuring that your private system’s cleanout remains accessible at all times so it can be reached quickly in an emergency. Please note that Town employees are not authorized to move any furniture or other heavy objects that may block access to cleanouts.
